To appreciate this new feature of InDesign's Text Wrap tool, you have to think differently than we have for the past 20 years (or more if you came from PageMaker or QuarkXpress.
No, the Text Wrap Around Subject feature doesn't require you to isolate the photo or graphic for it to be recognized. With this new feature, InDesign the heavy lifting and figures out (most of the time) what the subject is and creates the wrap for you.
Pulling from Photoshop's Select Subject playbook, InDesign is equally effective at recognizing what the subject in the photo or graphic is.
And just like all of the other Text Wrap settings, you can switch to your Direct Selection Tool for some fine tuning by selecting the anchors along the wrap and moving them.
