Apple is using its new HEIC format for photos, but some applications haven’t caught up, yet. The list is changing rapidly. Illustrator just added .heic support in the CC 2022 upgrade, for example, but, as of this writing, InDesign and Acrobat do not.
Keep in mind there are NON-Adobe applications that need photos, but don’t support .heic.
It’s also worth noting that there are MANY instance when a format needs to be changed into something “usable.” JPEG2000 (jpf) files, for example, may need to be changed into jpg or something else that’s supported by InDesign (or other apps). Camera Raw files are another example.
And what about non-image files that you want converted to something raster. Have you ever needed a folder of PDFs converted to JPGs before? What about a bunch of .eps or .ai files converted to PNGs, or TIFFs? Yep, the tip in this episode works for that, too.
It’s this simple: if it can be opened in Photoshop, this trick will work to convert it into a .jpg, .tif, or .psd. You can even size it while you’re doing it.
One part of the Episode where I open the .heic files in Camera Raw only supports .jpg, .tif, .heic, and camera raw files (most formats).
Some of what we cover in this Episode includes:
What’s NOT covered is Actions in Photoshop. In my opinion, this is not as fast as the techniques shown here, so I’ve left it out. However, if you like using Actions, you CAN use them to open .heic files and convert to other formats. You can even go to File> Automate> Batch and batch process a folder of .heic files using actions, if you prefer.
